Missing Milestone

A SEARCH has been launched for a missing milestone which disappeared during lockdown. Llanfihangel Rhydithon Community Council is keen to find out the whereabouts of one of its historic milestones in Dolau.

The milestone, which sat on the verge of the A488 between Dolau and Knighton, is one that was erected by Radnorshire Turnpike Trust in the early nineteenth century, and around 50 examples remain in Radnorshire. They are all listed monuments, and part of the local historic environment and history, reminding us of the Rebecca riots.

The riots, which took place in the rural parts of Wales, in 1839-1843 were a series of protests made by tenant farmers against the payment of tolls charged to use the roads. Turnpike Trusts owned most of the main roads, fixing the tolls and deciding how many tollgates could be built.

Members of the Milestone Society look after the milestones in the area, but this one seems to have disappeared during lockdown.

Any information about the missing stone can be sent to the Community Council Clerk Dan Price at Oakfield, Dolau, Powys, LD1 5LT, who has promised to go the extra mile to see this piece of Dolau history returned to its original setting.
